Big Hero 6. Tadasho Hamada dies scene analysis

Big Hero 6 beginning scene Tadashi Hamada dies.

This scene has an initial impact of emotional investment, Itg portrays these adorable characters who are brothers and share a strong passion of engineering as Tadashi persuades his younger brother he is a genius and he can get into the same college as Tadashi. You are left sad by the end of the scene, yo are left wondering where the film can go from here. One of the main characters got killed off within the first 15 minutes! Your brain scrambles for what kind of outcome this scene will produce.

This scene sets the tone for the entire movie because, without his brother, what will Hiro do? This scene sets the stage for the entire plot, without this scene there would be no reason for the movie to continue, It is the overarching reason for all of Hiros actions later in the film. It Foreshadows the death of the professor Callahan and shows a very traumatic emotional moment for Hiro losing his brother.

Insert pictures of notes here.

The overall impact of this scene is to leave the viewer emotional invested in Hiro and wonder what he will do to receive closure or bring justice to Tadashis death .

There is dialogue in this scene but minimal. It starts off with a wide zoom to Hiro was liking towards his brother leaning on a railing. Next, there is some light brotherly banter followed by laughter then silence. Then Tadashi says

“Welcome to nerd school, nerd”

Bumps him on the shoulder in a lovinging brotherly way.

“Hey I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you, you know, thanks for not giving up on me”

A very heartfelt statement IMMEDIATELY followed by a fire alarm and a quick change of pace. The silence and dialogue is filled by loud rumbling of a fire and flames roaring and yelling by others. The last interaction Hiro has with his brother is

“Tadashi No!”

“Callahan is in there, someone has to help!”

And then almost instantly he runs into the building, which then explodes in a very dramatic close up slowed down scene where Hiro is holding o not his brothers hat and protecting himself from the shrapnel.

I see a lot of wide zooms in this particular scene, and the color story of the shot changes drastically with the mood. The boys converse in front of the campuses dorms at night, a blue toned sky with its yellow lights illuminating from the windows. The shot angles I could identify were as follows from beginning to end,

Slow wide pan down to brothers conversing

Solid front facing, with vignette effect

Close up lower view of Tadashi and side profile of Hiro

Opposite when Hiro speaks

Quick pan to tadashi's face, which changes to concerned as the alarm rings,

ABRUPT wide back shot as the boys run out of frame

Fast pace, LOUD zoom that follows them as they run to the building

Low shot of boys standing in front of massive building on fire. Pan to side wide shot of girl running out of building. Tadashi helps and runs out of frame

Zoom out to back shot Hiro grabs his arm, the color faded leaving the silhouettes exposed. Hiro alone, fire gleaming in his eyes.

Tadashi runs in , wide shot, hat flies off.

Zoom in on hat landing on ground and Hiro picking it up and looking back at the building. BOOM Wide white blast and loud rumbling throws Hiro towards the camera. Fades into white.

Fades back to white noise and Hiro lying on ground with hat, disgruntled.

Fire sirens, more detailed white noise, “TADASHI,TADASHI”

The way this shot is “filmed” created is to change the pace of a heartfelt brother conversation to life or death, literally. The comfort of the colors in the background they are first placed in creates a feeling of calmness and loved with the viewer. Then you hear loud rumbling and the shots go from slow and low to fast and loud, with bright dangerous colors. You see many other people running through the screen trying to get away. You see the heroic actions of Tadashi and the immediate elimination Of his character after he enters the building. This scene is meant to grab the viewer by emotional connecting them to the characters and then pulling the older brother from the situation. This leaves the viewer sad and allows for a pause in the plot, which s then turned into the entire purpose of the movie. This scene is crucial to the movie and without it you would not have a full movie, this is also because Tadashi is his main. Motivation through the movie and is eventually brought back into focus.
